Intro

There are several ways to create a wooden texture depending on the type of wood you’re looking to make and this tutorial will walk you through most of them. Texturing wood is quite fast and yet very effective as it brings life to your creations.

Palette

Recolour the basic palette to suit your needs. You’ll need at least 3 colours for wood texture + another one if you’re going to make multiple wood planks to be used as a divider. 

Base

Choose the darkest of the wood colours and create a wood plank with Box tool or Face tool if you’re making a floor/wall

Multiple Planks

If you are creating multiple planks, like we will for this tutorial, paint a straight line with either Create or Line tool

Streaks

Choose the lightest of the three woods colours and start drawing swirls and flowy lines. You can use a brush of any size, but the smaller the size, the more delicate your final texture will look. These will be the wood streaks. To create a less textured wood planks, draw the streak lines with less swirls

Details

Choose the middle wood colour and add random blotches of colour spots all around the darker base colour. Try to not break the lightest colour lines. If you filled too much with the middle colour, you can always go and paint those with the darker one. Try to avoid any sort of pattern to make it look more random. For the less textured wood planks follow the streaks with the middle wood colour 

Adjustments

If the contrast between the wood colours is too much, adjust any colours to your liking and if you’re creating multiple planks, add some darker colour into the plank divider itself, too.

Smaller Planks

When working with a smaller scale, still use the lighter wood colour to create the wood streaks, and then surround them with random spots of medium wood colour
